Malcolm Kenyatta Elected as DNC Vice Chair

Democratic National Committee members elected Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta as one of its three vice chairs. Kenyatta’s election marks a significant milestone, reflecting the growing representation of LGBTQ+ individuals in political leadership positions.

On February 1, 2025, Pennsylvania State Representative Malcolm Kenyatta was elected as a Vice Chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC). He joins fellow Vice Chairs Artie Blanco, a union and Latino civic engagement advocate from Nevada, and David Hogg, a gun violence activist and Parkland shooting survivor from Florida.

Kenyatta, representing Philadelphia’s 181st District, has been a prominent figure in Pennsylvania politics. In 2018, he made history as the first openly LGBTQ+ person of color elected to the Pennsylvania General Assembly. He has been an active community leader since his youth, serving as a junior block captain in Philadelphia at the age of eleven.

In his new role, Kenyatta aims to strengthen the Democratic Party’s connection with working families and address pressing issues such as economic inequality. He emphasized the importance of not apologizing for Democratic values, stating, “We have to be clear about what we stand for and not spend four years apologizing for being a Democrat.”

Kenyatta’s election reflects the DNC’s commitment to diverse leadership and its focus on engaging a broad spectrum of voters. His experience and perspective are expected to contribute significantly to the party’s strategies in upcoming elections.
