We didn’t ask for a free ride, but Gaga is taking us to our living room dance floors to jump and dance.
That’s right little monsters, Lady Gaga’s new song, “Rain On Me,” is out, and we all are thirsty for that rain. Last Thursday, Gaga dropped a bomb straight from Chromatica to planet Earth. Her latest collaboration with miss Ariana Grande has everyone dancing their asses off.
“Rain On Me” is a dance-pop song full of fun, upbeat rhythms. This song makes you want to jump off your couch and have that dance party you’ve been craving, but missing thanks to Miss Rona Virus.
This upbeat, funky dance-pop song may have you wondering why it sounds so familiar. Well, it’s easy; Gaga’s come back to her old dance-pop roots. YES! That’s what we’ve all been waiting for.
Don’t misunderstand me, “Joanne” was a full journey of emotions and profound, intricate moments. But let’s be real, what the gays want is to leave their heads and hearts on the dance floor. And even though we can’t do it right now, it doesn’t mean we can’t have the joy of dancing.
The song is a well-balanced piece highlighting Gaga’s full, strong chest voice with some touches of 90s pop, giving us all the dance vibes. Then we have the sweet and versatile vocal trills that Ariana skillfully dominates so easily. Girl, she knows how to do it! This contrast meshes perfectly and lets both of them have their own moments of bright and dark vibes.
Even though the song is written in the basic pop standard (Verse-Pre-Chorus-Post-Bridge), it’s produced with uptime beats, synths, and electric cords that’s sure to be a dance floor success. And don’t even get me started with that beat-drop that Gaga gives us after her deep and sensual (Drum roll) “RAIN-ON-ME!” As the beat dropped, so did I — dead, on the floor! Or that almost “rappy” verse where she tells us she could be our Galaxy. Girl, Chromatica will be our Galaxy.
Ariana Grande is known for her bright, powerful voice and incredible control. I may have missed her well-known whistle register on this track, but it didn’t really need it. Okay, you may say “meh, another dancefloor song” — but no! Ladies and gentlemen, Gaga’s little monsters know her lyrics are full of deep meaning and hidden gems. And this one ain’t lacking.
So let’s dive in on some of her lyrics and what they represent.
For the sake of not going too long, I’ll share only a few of the meanings of the lyrics. You’ll have to work to put together the rest.
Let’s start with the one that is in everyone’s mind:
“I’d rather be dry, but at least I’m alive (Rain on me)”
In this one, Gaga dives deep into her addictions. She shared some insight about the song with Zane Lowe during a Beats 1 interview. In her words, the rain is the number of tears and the alcohol she was taking in. It’s all of those things we keep to ourselves that end up eating our minds, slowly leaving us in this deep hole. But still, not everything is bad.
When she started working on the album, she was in a cathartic moment where she healed her mind and body by working on her addictions and putting them into this song. “I’d rather be dry,” clearly is a wink to alcohol and sobriety. A struggle that lots of people, especially in the gay community, face every day.
But hey! Don’t worry! “At least we are alive.” Let’s take those tears, those feelings, and just let them pour, let them fall, and dance over them. Soon you will find happiness and joy.
“Chromatica” is scheduled for release this Friday. “Rain On Me” is available to stream or download now.
