A Decade After Marriage Equality, Obergefell Calls for Continued Advocacy at Equality Illinois Gala
CHICAGO, IL – On February 8, 2025, LGBTQ+ advocates, allies, and community leaders gathered at the Hilton Chicago for the annual Equality Illinois Gala, a celebration of resilience, progress, and ongoing advocacy. This year’s event held particular significance as Jim Obergefell, the lead plaintiff in the landmark Supreme Court case that secured nationwide marriage equality in 2015, was honored for his enduring contributions to LGBTQ+ rights.
A Celebration of Legacy and Advocacy
The gala, considered one of the Midwest’s premier LGBTQ+ advocacy events, marked the 10th anniversary of Obergefell v. Hodges, the Supreme Court ruling that legalized same-sex marriage across the United States. Since that historic victory, Obergefell has remained a dedicated activist, advocating for protections against discrimination and fighting against the resurgence of anti-LGBTQ+ policies nationwide. His work continues to inspire, particularly in an era where fundamental rights remain under threat.
I never imagined that my personal love story would turn into a legal battle that would impact millions, but our work is not done
–Jim Obergefell
“I never imagined that my personal love story would turn into a legal battle that would impact millions,” Obergefell said in his acceptance speech. “But our work is not done. Equality must be defended, expanded, and upheld in every state, every community, and every home.”
A Night of Recognition and Renewed Purpose
The evening was filled with heartfelt speeches and reflections on the progress made over the past decade, as well as the challenges ahead. Attendees included elected officials, business leaders, and prominent LGBTQ+ activists who reaffirmed their commitment to the fight for equality. The event also raised crucial funds to support Equality Illinois’ advocacy efforts, including initiatives to combat anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, provide resources for queer youth, and promote diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
Brian C. Johnson, CEO of Equality Illinois, underscored the importance of sustained activism: “The fight for equality didn’t end in 2015. We are here tonight because the work continues. Because of leaders like Jim, we know what’s possible when we stand together.”
Looking Forward
The celebration of Obergefell’s contributions was both a tribute and a call to action. With ongoing legal battles threatening LGBTQ+ rights, the message of the evening was clear: unity and vigilance are more critical than ever.
As the evening concluded, attendees left with a renewed sense of purpose, inspired by Obergefell’s words and the shared determination to protect and advance LGBTQ+ rights for generations to come.
