GLAAD, the leading media advocacy organization for LGBTQ+ rights, has launched a groundbreaking new initiative called ‘Weather Watch’, a creative campaign aimed at educating the public about legislative developments affecting LGBTQ+ communities across the United States.
A Forecast for LGBTQ+ Rights
‘Weather Watch’ is designed as a policy tracker that presents legislative updates in an engaging, accessible format. Featuring RuPaul’s Drag Race alum Salina EsTitties as the program’s resident “policy meteorologist,” the initiative provides video segments and social media updates that break down both pro- and anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, offering a clear path for advocacy and action.
“Much like the weather, political climates change rapidly, and our community needs to stay informed,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD. “With ‘Weather Watch,’ we’re making sure LGBTQ+ Americans and allies know exactly what’s happening in their states and what they can do about it.”
Keeping Communities Informed and Engaged
The initiative will provide regular video updates with a mix of humor and urgency, categorizing legislative efforts into “sunny skies” for pro-LGBTQ+ laws and “storm warnings” for policies that threaten LGBTQ+ rights. Through social media posts, livestreams, and an interactive map on GLAAD’s website, the program seeks to demystify legal jargon and encourage civic engagement.
“Not everyone has time to sift through legal documents, so we’re here to break it down,” said Salina EsTitties, who will deliver these updates in her signature witty style. “Think of me as your queer weather girl, except instead of a cold front, I’m tracking political BS!”
A Call to Action
In addition to tracking legislation, ‘Weather Watch’ provides viewers with direct actions they can take, such as contacting lawmakers, joining advocacy campaigns, or donating to organizations fighting for LGBTQ+ rights.
The program launches at a critical time, as several states have introduced bills that restrict transgender rights, limit discussions of LGBTQ+ issues in schools, and challenge non-discrimination protections. Conversely, states like California and New York are advancing measures to expand LGBTQ+ protections and healthcare access.
GLAAD encourages viewers to follow ‘Weather Watch’ updates on social media and visit GLAAD.org for more information on how to get involved.
With humor, visibility, and a commitment to justice, ‘Weather Watch’ is set to become an essential tool in the fight for LGBTQ+ equality—because when it comes to human rights, everyone deserves to see the storm coming and prepare accordingly.
